2009 Intercity Bus Security Grants Announcement

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the availability of nearly $12 million in security grants for over-the-road bus operators. Both fixed route- intercity bus and charter bus service operators may apply for funds through this competitive grants process. The maximum Federal share of any successfully awarded project is 75%. Grantees will be required to provide non-Federal funding of at least 25% for approved project costs.

For Tier II applicants (most charter operators fall in this category), the minimum amount that may be requested for projects focused on training and/or exercises is $5,000. There is no minimum amount for vulnerability assessments or security plan development. The minimum amount that may be requested for other projects is $25,000. Allowable costs also include “facility security enhancements that focus on lighting, fencing, securing gates, door access codes, cameras, etc.

All details are contained in the “Intercity Bus Security Grant Program Guidance and Application Kit” available by clicking here.

The Department of Homeland Security will be holding weekly teleconferences to answer questions.
