UMA Supports Nomination of Hersman for NTSB Chair
The United Motorcoach Association is pleased to give President Obama’s nomination of Deborah Hersman to National Transportation Safety Board Chair its full support and endorsement. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent Federal agency charged by Congress with investigating aviation, railroad, highway and marine accidents, as well as issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents.
“It is a great pleasure to support Deborah Hersman’s nomination to Chair the NTSB,” noted Victor S. Parra, UMA’s President & CEO. “Since her appointment to the NTSB in 2004, she has been a strong advocate of bus and motorcoach safety, and her first hand knowledge and practical experience will continue to be a great asset to the Board.”
Ms. Hersman has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of our industry and headed several bus and motorcoach crash investigations including the August, 2008, crash of a chartered motorcoach in Sherman, Texas; the November, 2006, school bus crash in Huntsville, Alabama; and the April, 2005, collision of a school bus with a trash truck in Arlington, Virginia, as well as having chaired the October, 2008 public hearing on the January, 2008, motorcoach accident in Victoria, Texas. UMA honored Ms. Hersman in 2005 for her support of coach industry safety initiatives during her years as Senior Professional Staff Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation (1999 – 2004).
“UMA and our members have always put passenger safety first,” added Parra, “and we look forward to working with nominee Hersman to continue working towards the common goal of improved bus and motorcoach safety.”
