Constitution Avenue Roadway Construction Project Continues; Westbound Lane Closure to Result
Washington, D.C. – Beginning Thursday, April 13, the National Park Service will begin the second phase of a one-lane closure to westbound traffic on Constitution Avenue between 15th and 17th Streets, N.W.
Phase One began March 1 and includes the westbound curb lane of Constitution Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. Phase Two, which will begin Thursday, April 13th, includes the westbound curb lane of Constitution Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets. Motorists and pedestrians will be notified with message boards and construction signs.
This lane closure is necessary to support a National Park Service project to renovate the Ellipse area, by repairing utility and by replacing sidewalks, curbing, street lights, benches and other features. This project, the first rehabilitation of the Ellipse since the late 1940s, will result in increased enjoyment of the area by park visitors and those who use it for events and other activities.
The planned completion date for the first phase is June 1. The planned completion date for the second phase is July 12. Weather delays may require adjustments to the schedule. The NPS will continue to inform the public and the media of any adjustments in the work schedule. Every effort is being made to minimize traffic delays and accomplish the work in a timely manner.
