UMA Action Alerts Charter Service Rule in DangerRep Adam Schiff (D-CA) from the 29th District in California has issued a “Dear Colleague” letter to all Members of the U.S. House of Representatives asking them to support legislation that would essentially render the recently revised Charter Service Rule ineffective. At issue is special and large events; in your community which Rep. Schiff apparently believes would be better served by local tax subsidized transit authorities than by private operators and their employees. Rep. Schiff has asked Congress to consider the following language in future legislation:“Notwithstanding any other provision of law or regulation, a recipient of federal financial assistance from the Federal Transit Administration may provide transportation to the general public for events or functions that occur on an irregular basis or for a limited duration, regardless of whether the service is paid for in whole or part by a third party or whether a premium fare is charged, so long as the service is available and open to the general public attending public events or functions, and the recipient determines the route and schedule of the service provided.” Read Congressman Schiff's Letter URGENT ACTION IS REQUIRED!! The recent UMA Industry Assessment reveals that two-thirds of our members are enjoying reduced transit competition due to the recently revised Charter Service Rule. We must not return to the days when local operators were precluded from offering local charter service. What You Need to Do 1.
